Clinical Hypnotherapy is a form of psychotherapy combining cognitive therapeutic counselling with subconscious healing techniques.
Much mental and emotional distress, even some physical illness can be traced back to an imbalance between cognitive and conscious beliefs and desires stored in our subconscious mind below conscious awareness. The state of hypnosis can reach the subconscious where change happens and habits are formed, unlike other more conscious forms of therapy.
What training does a practitioner have to provide this service?
Judy, our new Clinical Hypnotherapist, completed her Advanced Diploma of Clinical Hypnotherapy at The Clinical Hypnotherapy Centre, Melbourne in 1997 after achieving her Diploma from the Academy of Hypnotic Science in 1996. To this, she added NLP (neuro-linguistic Programming), Time Line Therapy and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), that couples holistically well with her Naturopathy training. Judy has now been using these approaches for twenty-seven years with many successful outcomes for her clients.
What are the health benefits of Hypnotherapy?
Early on in her career Judy realized that you need to understand how the client is thinking, their beliefs and perceptions, and these may need to change before healing can take place. As an example of this, many times clients with weight problems do better in addressing their emotions, as well as diet and exercise, as often there may be trauma from the past which needs to be dealt with before results can be achieved. Hypnotherapy is a perfect example of mind/body healing where you can address psychological and emotional issues.
Over the past few years its reputation has grown enormously, to the point where it's highly likely someone you know has had Hypnotherapy - perhaps to stop smoking, or to lose weight, or to get rid of a phobia or fear.
Hypnotherapy has proven to be more effective than many other similar modalities at changing beliefs, habits and behaviours, having a better outcome with less time.

Is hypnotherapy hard to comply with?
Not at all! Hypnotherapy is a very relaxing therapy in all ways. The changes are made in the subconscious so very little is required from the client. Clients really enjoy the experience and often return, wishing to sort out other issues. All that is required is the will to be hypnotized. If someone attends a session to please a partner or parent for example, and really doesn’t want to be there, the therapy is unlikely to work. A positive mindset is also advantageous to have.
Can everyone be hypnotised?
Hypnosis is actually a part of your everyday life. When you drift off and daydream, it is a form of hypnosis. On waking and falling asleep, that twilight state, is also hypnosis. There are different depths of hypnosis that can be reached. Many clients fall asleep, but they still hear the suggestions as they awaken when instructed. We actually go into a hypnotic state often everyday. We are also hypnotized by what we see on TV or on billboards. We are hypnotized by games and poker machines with all of their music and colour repetitively flashed before us.
In summary, Clinical Hypnotherapy has therapeutic value and can assist to take you from where you are to where you want to be with your concern.
How long is the consultation?
The initial consultation is usually between 90 minutes and 2 hours as the client’s presenting problem is talked about, and relevant history taken before hypnotherapy session is performed.
Subsequent sessions are up to an hour in length and follow up the first session and any changes in the presenting problem are discussed, followed by another hypnotherapy session.
We recommend that the initial patient profile form be emailed to you. This is to be filled out and returned to the clinic prior to the initial consultation. If it is not possible to email, please come 15 minutes early for your initial consultation.
What is involved in consultation?
The initial consultation includes history taking, discussing the presenting problem and its affect on the client and the desired outcome. Also discussed are any fears or apprehensions of hypnotherapy, as well as a good opportunity to answer any questions. When the client is comfortable, hypnotherapy is performed.
Subsequent consultations discuss the progress since the last consultation, with any issues addressed and hypnotherapy performed again.
How long do I need treatment?
Treatment continues until the desired outcome is achieved. With hypnotherapy results are usually rapid. As the subconscious mind learns through repetition, Judy prefers to have a minimum of 3 sessions and offers these as a package. This is starting point for smoking cessation and, in some cases, is all that is needed. Even if the client ceases smoking after the first session, it is still recommended to continue the package as reinforcement and to develop the new habit of being a non-smoker.
The advantage of hypnotherapy is that it has fast results and helps to change the clients problem without the resistance that may be present in other therapies. It is painless and effortless and very relaxing.
As the subconscious mind is being addressed, rather than the conscious mind, the effect is deeper and limiting beliefs can be changed more easily.
Will health insurance cover me?
Unfortunately, health funds don’t usually cover hypnotherapy although this may change. However our consultations and packages are affordable. When the outcome is positive, for example when you quit smoking, you no longer buy cigarettes so save a lot of money. You can estimate your savings here by working how much money you spend on cigarettes per week?
The important thing to ask yourself is what your health and/or the peace of mind is worth.
