The importance of your feet to your back
A lot of patients ask us why, as chiropractors, we look at the feet. We do this as there is a relationship between your feet and your spine. We assess this because your feet effect how your knee, hip, back….even how your neck works.
We use a laboratory in the USA called Foot levelers that has made custom made orthotics company for over sixty years. Bergamo Chiropractic and Nutrition Centre was one of the first centres in Australia to adopt Foot Levelers. These orthotics are designed by chiropractors with the view of looking at the relationship between the feet with your spine.
Each foot has three arches which can affect your posture, alignment and joint wear. Foot Levelers use a special digital foot scanner to examine your feet and detect a collapsed foot arch. From these images, a custom made flexible orthotic is designed that help support the ankle joint.
How do we assess your feet?
We assess this in a number of ways.
In our examination, there are 5 red flags of a foot that is pronated excessively.
- Foot Flare
- Internal knee rotation
- Bowed Achilles tendon
- Calcaneal eversion
- Excessive lateral shoe wear
What are your feet telling you?
Our 2 minute, non invasive process of scanning our patients feet is a means to determine the pressure under ones foot. Ideally there should be even fairly similar pressure front and back on the feet.
Who can benefit?
These orthotics are particularly useful for those with recurrent feet, knee, hip and low back problems. These have also been used by athletes for performance enhancement as a better foot alignment helps the entire framework of the body.
